The Prophet Muhammad (Salla Llahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam) said, “Verily Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people but He takes away knowledge by taking away the scholars, so that when He leaves no learned person, people appoint ignorant as their leaders. They are asked to deliver religious verdicts and they deliver them without knowledge, they go astray, and lead others astray.” [Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim]

For any Hamza Yusuf fans, do you ever recall him mentioning a certain book in one of his lectures, I think it was a book or paper that talked about why people converted to such and such religion. ringing any bells?
The image-obsessed, bloodthirsty, sensationalistic world outside your window is the real madhouse.

No idea, I once heard from Lumumba (in March 2008) that he recommended such a book or study in one of his lectures, and ever since then I've been looking for it.

This is what Lumumba said at the time:

from what I remember, the book was somewhat of an anthropological study, discussing the motivations for conversation and the author acknowledged that Islam had them all
Although later in the conversation he said that sociological might be more accurate.
