If you are still curious and not entirely satisfied...
I own a VBulletin forum and can tell you that apart from the spam, a lot of people do actually register but can't figure out a way to post or start a thread. I had to write a thread on my forum to let newbies know how to use the forum!
Secondly, another thing I have observed is a lot of people sign up but really have no intention of posting. Now my forum is a special case because there are a lot of useful attachments there, which one can only access after registering. But I am sure it happens on all forums to some degree.
Thirdly, Ratatosk, I use a very effective Mod which has effectively reduced spam registeration 100%. It's called NoSpam. Here's the link to the VB 3.6 version. I use questions like Type Oracle, or what is 1.5 + 2.5 etc. No bot in the world can be programmed for such random questions. Since I added it, never had a problem with Spam registerations.
