    Welcome to Mercy

In this lecture, Shaykh Abdal-Hakim Murad addresses to a group of converts in which he discusses the delicate balance between past and "future"as embodied in the tension that exists in the psyche of the convert in his relationship between himself and the historic Muslim world - what he terms "the New Jahiliyyah".

Shaykh Abdal-Hakim Murad (aka Timothy Winters) is a very discipline speaker and one of my favorites. Its a short lecture, well worth listening to.

1.4 billion people live under the poverty line - 1.25 USD per day. 20000 Africans die needlessly everyday due to AIDS, malaria and TB. 1.02 billion people do not have enough to eat. 3/4s of this are rural poor farmers who will also bear the brunt of global warming.

    Is democracy globally viable?

I recommend this panel discussion very highly. There were voices that called for humility in US foreign policy and there were others that spoke of the fear of 'Islamist' forces. There were discussions on the relationship of economic state and democracy. There were discussions on whether a third political space should be created in countries to foster democracy and if so, how.

There was full fledged unanimity on protecting Israel because they all believed that it was the only democracy in the Middle East that was being threatened in the region.

Great idea to split this from the video vault and make it a 'lecture Hall'. While posting the links, I knew it didn't fit the video-vault thread.

    Combating Political Islam in Asia

For the first time I got to hear the full argument from the western side of the us-vs-them camp. The lecture argues that there is an ideological battle between democracy and the values that dovetail it (democracy is not viewed as a value-less political system) and Islamism. It then posits that Islamists must be beaten in the battle to win the hearts and minds of the muslims. It acknowledges that this means muslims societies may have to face painful upheavals. Secularism and pluralism is emphasized as values that must be a part of democratization of a country. Yusuf Qaradhwi gets mention as a person who is mistaken as a moderate.

Watch it. I'm sure it will make many froth with anger.

Default The Age of the Warrior

    Salam,

Robert Fisk speaks about the century-old situation in and around the Levant whilst plugging his book. Highly recommended.

In "The Age of the Warrior", Dr. Robert Fisk has assembled a remarkable collection of essays and stories which serve to amplify and reflect the blood-stained past and present in which we live.

Fisk takes readers from the London bombings to the streets of Lebanon, from war torn Iraq to the horror of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, offering courageous eyewitness accounts.

Ranging from the inspirational to the utterly tragic, these essays encompass our world today - World Affairs Council of Washington, D.C.

Jared Diamond: The Evolution of Religions

Professor Diamond makes some interesting comparisons between primitive, indiginous belief systems and established religions, and argues that many functions of modern religions (i.e. providing moral guidance) have evolved to meet the needs of society as civilization has grown progressively more complex. Quite interesting.
