Assalamu Alaikum wa RahmatAllahi wa Barakatu
Attempting suicide (assuming the person survives) is a big sin, as it indicates a loss of hope. And we are told, do not lose hope in Allah's mercy.
A person who does kill himself is condemned to Hell as long as Allah chooses, assuming the person is in full possession of his mind.
In Surat An-Nisaa' Allah says "Do not kill yourselves for Allah has been Most Merciful to you". (4:29)
The biggest sin, without a doubt is "shirk billah" or associating anything with Allah, Suhanahu wa Ta'ala.

    Hope this helps.
    Wa assalaam

    Assalaam o alaikum brother

    Welcome here,

1 - There is not any punishment for attempting suicide in Islam, every human being has full authority for his life.

Every suicide has some cause, so if the attempt fails then it is duty of Islamic state or society to solve the problem that is the reason of suicide. Otherwise you are not able to prevent any one to committing suicide.

2 - But to kill himself is just like to kill another one in the eye to Almighty, it is just like a murder, so hereafter this act would be punished and the punishment will be same for both killer and the person committed suicide.

3 - The biggest sin is “Shirk”; to challenge the Uniqueness of Almighty in any aspect.

    Regards

Religious judgments against suicides usually contain this provision, but it seems to me that anyone committing suicide must be in a compromised mental/emotional state, most likely suffering from a clinical disorder. How does Islam determine 'full possession of mind?'

a person, technically, in 'full possession of mind' can commit suicide. I mean a person is not termed clinically mentally ill. Actually, come to think of it, mentally i'll person maybe less likely to commit suicide. I remember a couple of cases when the stock market crashed. Those people were perfectly healthy but they lost everything including personal possession, they just didn't want to live anymore. I know a family friend who was about to commit suicide but then his wife said if he kills himself then she will kill their children and herself. Then that guy backed off for the sake of his children and wife. Some people kill themselves for love Stupid, but it happens.

    Salaam all,

Religious judgments against suicides usually contain this provision, but it seems to me that anyone committing suicide must be in a compromised mental/emotional state, most likely suffering from a clinical disorder. How does Islam determine 'full possession of mind?'
The general rule related to Suicide is "Suicide is an act that is punishable by Hell". However, like all other sins except for Shirk, it is a general rule that accepts exceptions. So, while we can say that the act leads to Hell, we cannot condemn the committer of the act to Hell. That is because it is between him and God and because we do not know if exception applies to that particular case. So one can say that not everyone who commits suicide will go to Hell, although a good number will.

However, going back to "mental illness". This is left for God to define whether the mental illness of the particular person is acceptable or not. Why? because not all mental illness is the same. Some mental patients can do rational things, others cannot. It is not black or white issue. The severity varies, the ability to take control varies and so many things, that only Allah can be the judge. It is eventually between the person and God.

The third point is that suicide, whatever the cause, is about "loss of hope and desperation". The Qur'an clearly links loss of hope to Kufr= rejection of God. That is because a person with mature Iman= safety and trust in God, never looses hope.

Take care all and have a great day.

To consider that our logic is logical all the time is actually illogical. To consider that our understanding of the text is correct all the time is also illogical.
