It sounds like we all agree the article/author was wrong in claiming the Koran explicitly forbids marriage to non-Muslims.

maybe it is explicit to him, may not be so for others.. depends on what you understand by "explicit" - is it universally objective or personally subjective ?
Nine things the Lord has commanded me: Fear of God in private and in public; Justness, whether in anger or in calmness; Moderation in both poverty and affluence; That I should join hands with those who break away from me; And give to those who deprive me; And forgive those who wrong me; And that my silence should be meditation; And my words remembrance of God; And my vision keen observation.- Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Is "Nor shall you (women) marry idolatrous men, unless they believe" explicit?

I consider this explicit and a prohibition to marry non-Muslims.

My view is the Koran makes an allowance for Jewish/Christian women and therefore the prohibition is not for *all* non-Muslims.

The article I read on the forum claimed the Koran explicitly prohibits marriage to all non-Muslims. I would be curious how the author interprets the verse allowing marriage to Christians/Jews or how you reconcile the two passages, for that matter.

    I don't see the confusion:
Men are allowed to consider non-believing women.
Women are not allowed to consider non-believing men.

This means that in my eyes the claim that marriage to non-believers is prohibited to all Muslims is false and cannot be defended.

    Assalam O Allikum
Backspace islam does not allow muslim to marry with non-muslim women or men and Allah Almighty says in the holy quraan that ...............
Do not marry unbelieving women until they believe. A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though if she attracts you. And not marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe. A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though if he attracts you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the fire but Allah beckons by His grace to the garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His signs clear to mankind; that they may receive admonition. (al-Baqarah, 221).

    Sohail123,

Lawful unto you in marriage are chaste women who are believers and chaste women among the people of the book - Al Ma'idah 5:5

Please be careful about positing your opinion as fact and projecting it on the Qur'an.

Islam does not allow the Muslim to non-Muslims men or women in any condition. Except if they accept the Islam. Al-Quraan says ......
… (lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time, – when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).” – [Qur'an 5:5]

The verse is giving explicit permission to marry women of the People of the book. Do you understand that it doesnt refer to people of the book who lived in the past, it refers to people of the books that were revealed in the past (obviously one cannot marry someone who lived in the past)..

The only point of debate left is to situate the context of the verse and understand whether the permission is for all-time or was specific to the time of the Prophet (sws), which is again a matter of interpretation.
