Default The Arabs' impression of the Qur'an

What is the historical evidence for the claim that the Qur'an impressed the Arabs ~1400 years ago (Hadith, etc.)? Also, when Muhammad (SAW) debated the 'intellectual' opponents, did he lose? One person says that he lost debates against intellectuals such as Abul Hakam Ibn Hisham and Al Nadr Ibn AlHarith. Of course, he didn't provide any sources, so it is likely to be more deception put forward by the non-Muslim side.

There are numerous reports in the Hadith literature of the impact the Quran had on its initial audience - the story of Umar's (rta) conversion is only too well-known. Moreover, the Prophet (sws) was not indulging in sophisticated argumentation with any intellectuals - it was a case of a clear warning within the context of the historical experience of the Arabs and this is why they are reminded time and again of what happened to the earlier nations that denied their Messengers.

Another well-known narration by Bayhaqi is that of Utba bin Rabeeah who was asked by the Quraysh to challenge Rasulallah (sws) but was so astounded by the Quran that he shut himself up for days.
Nine things the Lord has commanded me: Fear of God in private and in public; Justness, whether in anger or in calmness; Moderation in both poverty and affluence; That I should join hands with those who break away from me; And give to those who deprive me; And forgive those who wrong me; And that my silence should be meditation; And my words remembrance of God; And my vision keen observation.- Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
