Thread: No music??

    Default No music??

    Assalam Alaikum..

Just another thing that bothers me is about the issue of music. Some say music is forbidden. Some say if the music does not have certain frequencies it is allowed. Some say it is no harm in listening to any music.

    Request for comments.

waleykumussalam. here too you will find some more who will give their own opinions, why dont you form your own opinion based on what you think is/are the sources of religion ?

Anyhow since you ask for comments, imho music that arouses base desires would be forbidden. The next step is that who decides which kind of music falls under this category - where the individual is empowered (inside his house) he would decide, and where the state is the authority, it would decide.

    wallahu 'alam.
Nine things the Lord has commanded me: Fear of God in private and in public; Justness, whether in anger or in calmness; Moderation in both poverty and affluence; That I should join hands with those who break away from me; And give to those who deprive me; And forgive those who wrong me; And that my silence should be meditation; And my words remembrance of God; And my vision keen observation.- Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Anything in extremes; and anything that detracts one from their obligations or causes them to have unhealthy/unislamic thoughts and feelings would be unlawful. You will always have varying opinions on this issue because there simply isn't a clear cut prohibition on music. Allah says what is haram and halal are clear in the Quran. Music is not one of them. Personally, I take Quran over any scholarly opinion or narration. But that's just me.

Quran is the Book of guidance. It provides information on all essential issues relevant to human beings. If music was that bad then it would be deemed haram.

When we look at hadith we find some support and some forbid music.

Then the issue of our own intellect. We have songs of patriotism which inspire us. football teams have songs that their supporters sing in matches Liverpool footbal club have the famous song " you will never walk alone". I cannot see anything wrong with them.

Then we look at history and find that prophet David used to sing psalms in praise of God with his harp, so surely singing songs is not prohibited. It is the type that is vulgar and incites negative emotions and feelings that are prohibited.

But even the 'hadith' that supposedly forbid music... it doesn't actually say "music is prohibited"... music is mentioned in a context... for example, music, alcohol, silk.... and then that same hadith talks about sheep? Surely there is a bigger connection here that we are all missing.. or the hadith it self is dyslexic/misnarrated?

Furthermore... Allah says the prophet is merely a messenger.. he doesnt say what is halal or haram.. but he can legislate withing those boundaries Allah has already set... as we can legislate within the already existing haram/halal boundaries...

Bro what is important for us is to be clear in our mind what the stance of religion is, as detailed in Quran and Sunnah. Individual views remain isolated reports.

Take AlBoriqis Salafist view(expressed in recent months) that what Muhamad, saw, said and did is sanctioned by God.

What he said and did in the sphere of religion is definitely sanctioned by God. Yes, it may at times become difficult to separate his personal choices from his religious authority, but this distinction is what he (pbuh) himself advised us to follow.

Further to what bro Shad has stated, prophet pbuh wore Arabic dress, rode a horse, liked black horse disliked eating desert lizard, fought with swords and lived in a tent. Some are personal likes and dislikes and others social and cultural ways of life. We follow prophet pbuh in matters of religion.

If some of those people thought about it closer, are they really talking about the prophet pbuh or scholars who have made conclusions based on the hadiths?

There's a hadith about Ibn Masud of the companions swearing by God that the verse about 'idle talk' is about music.

I find it strange that a companion (not prophet) would go as far as SWEARING IN THE NAME OF GOD to CONVINCE US ALL that music is haram. Why aren't there other hadiths that are in a similar vein... "I swear by God this verse is about alcohol"???

I thing no.Because most of the hadids in the world is now against the Qur'an.Hadid dosn't match with Qur'an.
