And I missed the last part, soul is mentioned in Quran so it is not made up, we just don't know its true reality because it is what is termed as mubashirat (things that is not part of our realm but informed us by God). I think speculating on it is pointless, because that takes away the purpose why it was informed to us.
I talked to my Bio teacher and he said it was hard to figure out what religious people mean by "soul", exactly, but that if they mean "consciousness" then we definitely have a consciousness/soul, although scientists have yet to figure out at which stage we develop one as opposed to other animals, but if they meant some sort of immortal soul, then we don't have one to the best of his knowledge. He said that people came up with their definitions of souls way back when people didn't have enough of a scientific understanding to understand consciousness, so they did the best they could, but that if we redefine it in our new context then it is probably a consciousness.
I think Quran uses two terms:
Ruh - which sometimes refers to Jibril (a.s.) and sometimes to the Divine spark breathed into man
Nafs - this probably refers to the human personality - I dont think it is independent of the body, but this seems to refer to the human being in essence. On the Day of Judgment, every Nafs will get what it deserves.
As hyd said, most of what we do here is speculation, since we have little knowledge about this matter..
Nine things the Lord has commanded me: Fear of God in private and in public; Justness, whether in anger or in calmness; Moderation in both poverty and affluence; That I should join hands with those who break away from me; And give to those who deprive me; And forgive those who wrong me; And that my silence should be meditation; And my words remembrance of God; And my vision keen observation.- Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
Thanks for your help everyone!
In Qur'an there is a Sura by the title The Soul Snatchers (Sura 79). In this Sura(79:1) ALLAH swears by the angels who tear out by force the souls of sinners (unbelievers).ALLAH says in verse 6:61 of the Qur'an that when the time of death approaches to someone, He immediately sends HIS messenger (angel of death, Azrail) to take the victim’s life. Ibn Kathir writes that Allah sends guardian angels to look over humans; the angel of death has angels who pull the soul from its body and when it reaches the throat, the angel of death captures it. They guard the soul of the dead person and take it to wherever ALLAH wills, to Illiyyin if he was among the righteous and to Sijjin if he was among the wicked.

Concept of ruh (soul) in Islam
"The soul is one of the things,
of which the knowledge is only with my Lord.
And of knowledge, you (mankind) have been given only a little."
[But He (Allah) fashioned him (Man) in due proportion and breathed into him something of His spirit. And He gave you the faculties of hearing and sight and feeling and understanding: Little thanks do you give!] (As-Sajdah 32:9)
