    Default Test tube meat-Halal?

    Test tube meat.
Meat grown from muscle stem cells is being grown in laboratories in Holland with the purpose of providing food.
Question is,will it be clasified as Halal?
    Thoughts please.

In my humble opinion until options of tazkiya of animals and provision of halal meat is available, it should be the preferred option. For those who are starving to death. They are given ruksat by religion to eat anything to save their lives. So for them it should not matter.

The feature on BBC news suggested one of the things it could be used for is burgers,so it may not just be aimed at starving.

I didn't know the Dutch were short on real food. :/

I betcha a million bucks it won't be halal. I don't see why it can't be, but it sounds like one of those "progress" things that imams can't handle.

Apparently 70% of food in a supermarket is genetically modified (in Canada at least). :/

Islam does not define what Halaal is. Islam defines what Haraam is. So if it does not qualify as Haraam/forbidden, there is no reason to say it's not Halaal.

However, in these matters and others, if a person uses common sense, he will find himself close to Islamic recommendations. Supposing if this meat is indeed available in the supermarket to buy, would you be 100% sure that it is safe to consume? Common sense dictates that experimental products should be avoided until one is sure of it's effects. So if I had the option, I would be more worried about it's safety than whether or not it's Halaal.

I've heard someone make a convincing argument that the Halaal / Haraam distinction is, among other things, about taking care of yourself. The extension, of course would be that you want to ensure that the meat is as safe as possible to be within the principles of Islam.

The taking care of yourself, I believe, would be pertinent to the spiritual aspect of the relationship with the Almighty. It's good to be healthy but where halal is concerned it is the spiritual cleanliness associated with the slaughter; an intertwined relationship between God, humans and animals.

You are right. After giving it some thought, we don't really know how to classify the meat. When traditional meats exist, they are probably a better alternative.

To do this, they'll have to isolate a gene from an animal, right? A knowledgeable brother told me that it would be halal if the gene was isolated from a halal-slaughtered animal.
