Here's how this is personal to me -
When I was active in the Tablighi Jamaat, it was commonly said in the Jamaat that the movement began with the Mewatis who had almost forgotten Islam. The movement took pride in how it rejuvenated Islam among the Mewatis. Now, as I read the above link, I feel sad at what is happening to the community that has long had a syncretic tradition and is being pulled on two sides by orthodox muslim groups and hardline Hindu groups. My heart goes out to this community. I wish people would leave them alone and simply focus on purifying themselves rather than spreading such hate in the world with their attempts at purifying others.
A celebrity who practiced syncretic beliefs quite instinctively (http://bhupindersingh.blogspot.com/2006/08/bismillah-khan-and-kabir-tradition.html)
While it is beyond me to comprehend syncreticism, I cannot help wonder how they are able to instictively incorporate the seeimingly contradictory beliefs.
