taking the life of a pet

According to Islam, Allah is all knowing and Merciful. Islam does not believe in euthanasia. e can alleviate someone's pain but not take their life knowingly and intentionally. Are we allowed to take the life a pet animal diagnosed to have terminal illness? or just allowed to alleviate their suffering? How do we justify that?

We must take the life of a pet if the pet is suffering to the extent that we either cannot find help for that pet or cannot afford it and cannot find any organization that can foot the bill.
