Alcohol when taken in excess increases the risk of heart attacks and also increases cholesterol and blood pressure.

Alcohol is associated with increased risk of cancers in the head and neck, intestines and breast.

Women drinking two units of alcohol a day have a life time risk of developing breast cancer that is 8% higher than a woman who drinks one unit a day.

6% of UK breast cancers could be prevented by reducing intake of alcohol to a very low level( less than one unit a week) .

It has been identified that 80-90% of head and neck cancers can be avoided by abstaining from smoking and alcohol.

In the muslim Ummah I think there is a bigger problem with smoking than with alcohol.

Recreational use of alcohol and drunkenness has negative effects that go beyond the physical health. Drunks will often lose their self control and commit indecent deeds that they would not generally do when sober. It ranges from bad speech, aggressiveness and violence, to promiscuity. i.e. I have heard too many stories of people cheating on their partners while drunk and then using that as an excuse.

That is probably the most shameful.

A survey done by the dept of health in the UK in 2005 showed that only in the UK every year £20 billion is spent to deal with alcohol related problems which include killings,accidents,hooliganism,absence from work,wife beating,fights on streets or in the pubs,liver failures etc etc.
Even Bible in many instances has strongly criticised Alcohol.I give you just one example;
PROVERBS 20 verse 1-Wine is a mocker,strong drink a brawler;and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
Can all those who drink alcohol sit in a quiet room for sometime and think about what they are doing?Alcohol is worst than poison 'cause poison will only kill the person who has consumed it while alcohol will kill others as well.

My Doctor prescribed a glass of red wine with my dinner each night to combat cholesterol and to improve heart function.

It seems to be working. Australia has an abundance of good wine.

Alcohol causes major health problems- The Cabinet Office reported up to 150,000 hospital admissions and 15,000-22,000 deaths in UK in 2003. Between 1991-2005, deaths directly attributed to alcohol have almost doubled More people are dying from alcohol related causes than from breast cancer, cervical cancer and infections with MRSA bug combined. Furthermore, the recent report from the World Cancer Research fund confirmed that even drinking alcohol within the so called "safe limits" increases the risk of cancer of the breast and upper gastro intestinal tract.

Drinking alcohol is a factor in more than half the violent crimes and a third of domestic violence. Between 780,000 and 1.3 million children are affected by their parent's use of alcohol in UK.30-60% of child protection cases and 23% of calls to the National Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Children about child abuse or child neglect involved drunken adults.

In US 11,400 college students between the ages of 18-24 die from Alcohol related injuries

in 2001 18% of US college students had clinically significant alcohol related problems in the past year.

It is a licensed killer and corrupter of souls,a destroyer of relationships and family life and a serious diversion from the worship of Allah.There is not enough help out there for people with alcohol addiction.
