Assalam-U-Alaikum and welcome to the forum,
The prayer is a Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and is prescribed at particular times of the day. The Muslims are obliged to pray in these times. The Holy Qur’an states:
<font color="#0000FF"> “Surely, prayer has been enjoined on Muslims, at the prescribed times.”</font> Al-Nisaa 4: 103
Postponing prayers during pressing circumstances to the time when one can perform them is permitted (e.g. when travelling). However, if we were all to decide to postpone our prayers and leave them for the evening of each day just because we can’t be bothered praying in prescribed times then we would have changed this Sunnah which is strictly forbidden. I stress once more that postponing prayers to a time when one can pray and combining prayers is only allowed when one really cannot pray on time. This is because:
<font color="#0000FF"> “God does not put on anyone a burden, which is greater than what he can bear.”</font> Al-Baqarah 2: 233
There seem to be good reasons as to why we pray in the five times of the day that we do. For instance, we start our day with a prayer to God. Is there any better way to start the day than that? Then just after midday when one might forget God; we pray to God. In the afternoon when people are most engrossed in their work, we remember God and leave everything behind for these moments. At sunset, we pray to God. Finally, at night before we sleep we end the day with a prayer to God. These are five particular times during the day that we submit to God and leave everything else behind. This has a great significance not just in the reward that we garner through this but also psychologically. It means that we remember God and strengthen ourselves spiritually which in turn will help us abstain from sin. Praying at different times of the day strengthens our conscience and keeps it sharp and alert. Thus God Almighty states:
<font color="#0000FF"> “And establish the prayers to remember Me”</font> Ta Ha 20: 14

Wassalam,
I think that an individual will normally know when he is in such a position that he really can’t pray. He would know whether it is intentional. The person would know whether his inner intention is to miss a prayer or whether he really wants to pray but cannot due to circumstances beyond his control. Anyway, here are some more examples:
Perhaps a person oversleeps and thus misses a prayer, (by oversleep I mean that the person intends to get up for the prayer but it happens that he doesn’t wake up)
Perhaps a person forgets about a prayer,
If any of the above two incidents occur, then the person should pray when he becomes aware of the situation (i.e. when he wakes up and when he remembers). For the above two incidents the prayer would not be considered missed as the person would have done it unintentionally and God tells us that He will not punish us for unintentional errors:
<font color="#0000FF"> “And there is no sin for you in the mistakes that you make unintentionally, but what your hearts purpose (that will be a sin for you). Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”</font> 33:5
According to a Hadith the Prophet (pbuh) said:
<font color="#0000FF">"A person is not guilty of negligence while asleep. The guilt of negligence is on a person only in his wakefulness. Therefore, if anyone among you forgets to offer his prayer or sleeps through the prescribed time, he should offer his prayer when he is reminded [or when he awakes]." </font> (Tirmidhi, Kitaab al-Salah)
Another example might be if an individual is working and is not given time to pray. However, here I would say that it is best to try and find a job that allows Muslims the little time that they need to perform at least the obligatory (fard) prayers which wouldn’t take more than a few minutes.
