Sources Say Informant Made Up Story of Men Who Slipped Into U.S.
The informant, identified as Michael Hamdani, who was arrested in Canada in late October 2002, created the story about 19 men who were seeking false passports in an attempt to get himself off the hook on criminal charges he was facing in the United States, sources said.
Based on Hamdani's information, the FBI issued an alert that launched an all-out effort by law enforcement officials, who feared terrorists might be seeking to attack Americans during New Year's celebrations.
Blunkett admits terror warning error
The original release warned of a possible chemical or nuclear terrorist attack on the UK using a "dirty bomb" or poison gas. The later statement contained a more general warning of "ever more dramatic and devastating" terror attacks. Mr Blunkett said the initial statement was released as a result of "a simple clerical error".
Bush's fake war on terror
Last weekend Bush's much-mocked secretary of homeland security, Tom Ridge, announced that Al Qaeda was planning attacks on five financial institutions in and around New York City and Washington, DC. Unlike previous such warnings, this one was said to be based on specific information. Accordingly, the alert was raised from yellow to orange in only a few locations, sparing the nation's hardware stores another run on plastic sheeting and duct tape. The White House was praised for learning from its past mistakes.
France Finds No Evidence of Hijack Plot
French authorities also investigated a man from Tunisia whose name was supplied by American intelligence. But the judicial official said man was in Tunisia with no plans to leave for the United States. He has no criminal record and does not belong to any radical Islamic groups.
Passengers were subjected to intense searches before being told hours later that their flights had been canceled. Many were angry.

A key piece of evidence linking Iraq to a nuclear weapons program appears to have been fabricated, the United Nations' chief nuclear inspector said yesterday in a report that called into question U.S. and British claims about Iraq's secret nuclear ambitions.
Documents that purportedly showed Iraqi officials shopping for uranium in Africa two years ago were deemed "not authentic" after careful scrutiny by U.N. and independent experts, Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told the U.N. Security Council.
Some US attack threats 'fabricated'
Terrorist suspects probably lied when they warned that attacks on the United States were imminent, Bush administration officials have said.
But they added that the dubious tip-offs were not the sole basis for raising the alert across the US last week to orange, the highest level since the anniversary of the 11 September attacks.
Separately, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said there was no need to panic, though Americans were wise to take precautions.
